A note about photo submissions to the blog:

First, let me say how much I appreciate getting good photos of walks for the blog.  The visuals from a walk are a terrific record for people wanting to reminisce or potential walkers wanting to get an idea of how the Bega Valley Bushwalkers operates.  Special thanks to Jeff Holmes, Mark Oakley, Peter Constable, Robert Lewin, Eric and Di Moon and others for their visual contributions over the past few years.

We've reached a point though where I can only post a limited number of photos for each walk.  There are various reasons, including the fact that for some people with internet accounts that limit their downloads, so many photos on the blog home page uses up too much download data.  For me, it is also time consuming and beginning to use up too much of my own data storage.

A few suggestions to help me out:
  • Please cull your photos before sending them to me - only send your very best shots of a walk or camp.
  • If you have a lot of photos (say over 10) you'd like to have on the blog, consider storing them somewhere online yourself.  I can easily put a link to your collection so people still have access - you can see how this will look on the post for the Wolgan Valley Camp.
  • I'd suggest using "Blogger", although other online storage options would probably also work (as long as they don't require membership for people to view them).  Blogger is easy to use and very effective.
  • Alternatively, you could put them into a small movie and upload to YouTube (and send me the link).  I've linked a few of Peter Constable's great videos from YouTube, and they work seamlessly.
I hope this change of plan doesn't deter anyone from taking photos for the blog, that's not my intention.  I just want it to work better.

Cheers,
Neil

13 November to 17 November - Mt Buffalo, Victoria

Walk Coordinators: Diane Moon, Eric Moon, Marie Oakley and Mark Oakley
Grade: Easy/Moderate Distance: See description
Base Camp
Meet: Monday a.m. at National Park campground at Lake Catani
Description: EARLY BOOKINGS ESSENTIAL FOR CAMPGROUND (Most people have already booked!)
Grade: Ranging from easy to moderate.
For those who are set up in time there will be a short walk on Monday afternoon. We will do day walks on Tues. and Thurs. On Wednesday 2 shorter walks. Depending on interest we could also do a short walk on Friday morning before leaving. There are over 90km of well defined National Parks tracks passing through amazing granite formations, pristine subalpine plant communities, waterfalls, unique landscapes and great lookouts.
The campground is run by Parks Victoria and is a beautiful spot set among Snow Gum woodlands. The lake is good for swimming and canoeing etc. Sites are unpowered, some are suitable for small caravans and campervans and others for tents. There are hot showers, flush toilets, dishwashing facilities and a laundry. There is also a communal stone shelter with tables and fireplaces. Campers are required to provide their own drinking water and firewood.
Those interested will need to book their own site through http://www.parkstay.vic.gov.au/mount-buffalo-national-park or call Parks Victoria on 13 1963.
Each site costs approx $50 per night, sharing would reduce this cost. 24 people have booked already. If you’re interested, please contact Diane and Eric 64932212 to discuss camping options. If you don’t want to camp, accommodation is available in Porepunkah (30km/45mins) or Bright (37km/50mins) from campground.

29 October - Coast Walk From Picnic Point to Aragunnu

Walk Coordinator: Ian Burns
Grade: Easy/Moderate
Distance: 9 km
Day event
Meet: 9:00 at picnic area Aragunnu Beach
Description: We will then organize a car shuffle back to Picnic Point to start walk
After our car shuffle we will walk from Picnic Point back to Aragunnu with a mixture of beach walking to off track bush walking.

8 October to 14 October - Wolgan Valley (week-long camp)

Walk Coordinators: Lyn Evans and Phillip Kendall
Grade: Easy/Moderate Distance: Several day and shorter walks
Base Camp
Meet: Sunday afternoon/evening (no fixed time) at Newnes NPWS Campground at the end of the Newnes Road. Contact Walk leaders for further information on how to get there.
Description: Grade: Varying from easy to moderate-hard
Terrain: Walking trails and some off-track walking in forest and rocky escarpment areas.
This is an extended camp in the Wolgan Valley which includes sections of Wollemi and Gardens of Stone National Parks and state forest areas in the Newnes Plateau. The camp will continue throughout the week from Sunday night to Friday night and we will leave on Saturday before the weekend crowds arrive. It is possible to drive there in one day and arrive at the camp on late Sunday afternoon. How long you stay and when you head back is up to you.
There is lots to see and do.
Newnes is a turn of the 20th century industrial site associated with the shale oil mining industry, with a lot of the infrastructure ruins easily visible and protected within Wolemi NP.
There is a fascinating half-day interpreted walk which we will definitely be including. This is sandstone pagoda country, which is essentially a northern extension of the Blue Mountains and there are some dramatic views including Wolgan Gap, one to watch out for on the Newnes Road, where it plunges into the Wolgan Valley. The terrain makes some of the walking difficult but very rewarding and we would rate it as some of the best bushwalking in NSW.
If you want to skip the harder full day walks, there are plenty of easier and shorter alternatives on NP walking trails close by. We will be including at least two of these easier walks in the program. One of these will involve the route of the former Newnes railway and coach route, with a fascinating tunnel complete with glow worms. The harder walks will include some rocky terrain and bush with the reward of some spectacular pagoda scenery. At the risk of spoiling the surprise, one walk has elements of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom!
No bookings or fees are required at the Newnes campground, which has basic facilites including pit toilets and fireplaces and is situated on the banks of the Wolgan River in an attractive setting. Bring drinking water to supplement river water for washing. To get there, turn north off the Great Western Highway a few kilometers to the west of Lithgow, on to the Mudgee Road, and turn right on the Wolgan Valley Road and on through the village of Lidsdale. The Wolgan Road is now mostly bitumen and just after crossing a creek, it turns to dirt for the last 7 km. It is fine for small vans and trailers. Go past the old Newnes Hotel to the National Park campground (not the one next to the hotel). The hotel no longer has a licence but serves coffee on weekends and also has cabins.
Please let us know (philkendall@internode.on.net or by phone) if you are planning to go and we will look out for you.
If you require further information, please contact Phil or Lyn on 64956315. We have lots of brochures and maps of the area but you are welcome to call in at the Lithgow Visitor Centre on your way through if you want to get personal copies.

Unfortunately, Peter Constable's video can't be posted on YouTube :(   Here's what Peter said:
"I can’t load Wolgan video to Youtube because of the Fleetwood Mac song, “Seven Wonders”.
Cheers, PC
PS Can do copies if anyone wants any of the clips done so far.
Need a USB or HDD so I can load them.

24 September - The Real Pambula Gold

Walk Coordinators: Heather Bond, Ian Bovill and Ulrike Groiss

Description: Walking into the goldfields and exploring the (outside of the) mines and mining equipment. Mostly on fire trails, though there will be some bush tracks and open bush. Most of the mines are easy to visit, but others (optional) will require more agility in the bush. Dry forest varies to creek vegetation.
Thanks for the video Peter Constable!

12 August to 14 August - Budawang NP

Walk Coordinator: Helen Turton
Grade: Moderate/Hard Distance: See description
Base Camp
Meet: Saturday lunchtime at Long Gully Camp
Description: The Budawang is a wilderness area in the southerI'm n area of Morton National Park, southwest of Ulladulla. The area has spectacular dramatic scenery of sandstone cliffs with lush bushland and beautiful rivers and creeks.
Directions to Long Gully Camp
Follow the signs to Pigeon House then go past the turn off (to Pigeon House) and continue on Yadboro Rd, cross the Clyde River and onto the Western distributor. Turn right into Long Gully Rd and continue to the camp. The road can get boggy when wet so it could be useful to have 4WD.
All walking will be on tracks but there are climbs of 400 to 600 meters which are steep and iron ladders up to summits.
The campsite has a drop toilet and picnic tables. There is water in the river or bring your own.
Saturday
Arriving about lunchtime and setting up camp with an easy afternoon walk to Yadboro Flat, 8 km return.
Sunday
A walk either to view Monolith Valley, climb the Castle or Byangee Mt . Distances vary but all have spectacular views.
Monday
Climb Pigeon House either from Yadboro (involves a car swap) about 11 km or the tourist route which is 5.2 km.
The road to Long Gully campsite is quite good and okay for 2WD.  If there is rain however the road could be slippery and 4WD is recommended. The directions into the campsite are as follows-
Turn left onto Monkey Mt Rd 32 km north of Batemans Bay travel onto Woodburn Rd 5.3km drive  a further 6km and then turn left onto Clyde Ridge Rd. Go for 7.7 km and turn right onto Yadbora Rd for 4.3km turn left to stay on Yadbora Rd and after 9.2 km turn left onto the Western Distributor. After 3.4km turn a slight right onto Long Gully Rd and onto the campground. A total of 70km from Batemans Bay taking 1 hr and 34 mins.

The campsite is not large so smallish tents would be best. There is the Yadbora River nearby so plenty of fresh water but could everyone bring some firewood to contribute  to the fire as there is little wood. I will be travelling up sat morning and setting up camp and after lunch there will be a short walk along the river. Sunday we will leave about 8 am to walk to Monolith Valley. This is graded medium/ hard as it is all track but steep climbing and walking along the base of The Castle is time consuming walking up and down large steps and over boulders and then along a scenic track to Monolith Valley. As we will be walking up and back the same way if anyone is unsure about making it the whole way then just go as far as is comfortable. The view from just the morning tea spot is exceptional. The entire walk has spectacular scenery and well worth the effort.  The next morning we will climb Pigeon House which can be done with a car swap or up and back the same way.
